KAUST’s appointment of new president to promote Vision 2030 Goals
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has named Prof.
Edward Byrne as its new president, effective September 1, succeeding Tony Chan.
This appointment is a significant step for KAUST as it pushes forward with its
Accelerating Impact Strategy, aimed at strengthening the university's role in
transforming research into practical solutions and groundbreaking innovations.
Since its founding in 2009, KAUST has been dedicated to addressing global
challenges in four critical areas: food, water, energy, and the environment.
Byrne’s extensive experience in both academia and industry is expected to
further these objectives, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and
solidifying KAUST’s status as a leading research and technology institution.

In his new role, Byrne will leverage his vast expertise from leading
top-ranked global universities. His previous roles include serving as president
of King’s College London and Monash University, where he was pivotal in driving

university embarks on a new era with its Accelerating Impact Strategy, it is an
honor to join an academic community at the forefront of translating research
into economically productive innovations that benefit society across the
