Saudi Aramco and ENOWA join hands to produce hydrogen-based
e-fuels
Aramco and ENOWA are set to collaborate on a groundbreaking
project in NEOM, involving the establishment of a cutting-edge facility
designed to produce hydrogen-based e-fuels. This state-of-the-art plant will be
dedicated to generating 35 barrels of NEOM renewable synthetic gasoline daily.
Located within ENOWA's Hydrogen Innovation and Development
Center (HIDC) in NEOM, the facility will utilize ThyssenKrupp Uhde technology
to create 12 tons of synthetic methanol each day, derived from green hydrogen
and CO2. Subsequently, ExxonMobil's fluidized-bed methanol-to-gasoline
technology will be employed to convert the methanol into e-gasoline.
Neom,
Aramco emerge as top bidders in carbon credits buying
To ensure a sustainable source of hydrogen for the
demonstration plant, a 20MW thyssenkrupp nucera alkaline electrolyser will be
utilized, eventually becoming part of the 2.2GW NEOM green hydrogen
megaproject. This electrolyser will supply the necessary eight tons of hydrogen
for the project. Notably, the origin of the CO2 used in the demonstration plant
has not been disclosed by the partners, and inquiries have been made to Aramco
for clarification.
Ahmad O. Al Khowaiter, Executive Vice-President of
Technology & Innovation at Aramco, emphasized the significance of synthetic
fuels in expediting the decarbonization of the global vehicle fleet, expressing
enthusiasm for this collaboration with their partners as a crucial step toward
realizing this goal. The announcement of this plant follows the earlier
unveiling of ENOWA and Aramco's plans for the HIDC in April 2022.
