Saudi Arabia promotes
Ajwa dates as part of sustainable agriculture
The Saudi Public
Investment Fund (PIF) has taken a significant step towards promoting
sustainable agriculture in Medina, Saudi Arabia. To achieve this goal and
enhance the Kingdom's economy in line with Vision 2030, they have established a
new company called the Al Madinah Heritage Company (MHC). The primary focus of
MHC is to develop the quality and production of Ajwa dates, a highly valued
fruit with both nutritional and cultural importance.
Majed al-Assaf, Head
of Consumer Goods and Retail in the MENA Investments Division at PIF,
emphasized the importance of the dates industry in Saudi Arabia's Food and
Agriculture sector, and its vital role in realizing Vision 2030.
The MHC will adopt the
latest agricultural technologies to foster sustainable agriculture in Medina.
Moreover, the company will concentrate on increasing the production and
distribution of Ajwa dates, catering to the growing global demand for this
esteemed fruit. This endeavor aims to bolster the Saudi Food and Agriculture
industry while diversifying the economy.
Ajwa dates are
renowned worldwide for their exceptional nutritional value and health benefits.
They hold a special religious and cultural significance in the Muslim world,
especially for the numerous pilgrims who visit Medina annually.
Over time, PIF has
made strategic investments in the Food and Agricultural sector to support local
economy diversification and strengthen produce industries. Notable examples
include the Saudi Coffee Company, promoting Saudi Khulani coffee, the Halal Products
Development Company, which invests in the halal products sector, and the Saudi
Agricultural Investment and Livestock Production Company (SALIC).
