New McLaren Formula E livery blends cutting-edge AI techniques

Jake Hughes and Rene Rast are gearing up for the upcoming London E-Prixs race with an exciting new McLaren Formula E livery. This distinctive design stands out as a "world first" in motorsport, as it incorporates generative artificial intelligence (AI) methods. McLaren teamed up with their title partner, NEOM, and members of NEOM's graduate development program in Saudi Arabia to bring this innovative concept to life.

Creating the livery involved a collaborative effort, with each contributor, including four graduates and the race drivers, sharing their personal visions. These visions were then fed into a text AI, which generated a series of prompts. Using a text-to-image AI, individual artwork was crafted for each vision based on these prompts. Finally, the six unique designs were fused into one cohesive scheme using an image-to-image AI and further enhanced to produce high-resolution graphics that adorned the car, all thoughtfully carried out by McLaren Racing designers. The team is proudly showcasing this special livery as part of their 60th-anniversary celebrations during the Formula E season finale.

As an additional benefit, the graduates involved in the creative process will be welcomed into McLaren's electric talent program, where they will undergo a comprehensive 12-month development scheme. McLaren is committed to sustaining this initiative in the future for NEOM graduates, fostering opportunities for talented individuals to shine in the world of electric racing.

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, expressed immense pleasure in partnering with NEOM to achieve the first-ever AI-designed livery in motorsport history. He emphasized that this milestone is a momentous occasion to commemorate McLaren Racing's 60 years of excellence. Brown further underlined McLaren's long-standing dedication to innovation, both in motorsport and beyond, and hailed this collaboration as yet another milestone in their quest to push boundaries and embrace a forward-looking approach.

Nadhmi Al-Nasr, CEO of NEOM, praised the contributions made by the graduates and highlighted how the partnership perfectly aligns with NEOM's commitments. The project showcases their focus on driving sustainable solutions, nurturing Saudi talent through development opportunities, and introducing groundbreaking technology to the world. The AI-generated livery exemplifies the creative and forward-thinking application of technology, seamlessly weaving McLaren's illustrious history with their visionary future.
