Saudi Arabia cancels NEOM desalination plant amid restructuring

NEOM has cancelled the Moonlight seawater desalination plant, which was initially planned to supply water to sections of the $500 billion megacity project in Saudi Arabia.

The Moonlight plant, located on the Red Sea coast, was tendered in 2024 and projected to produce 150,000 cubic meters of water per day. NEOM had intended for the facility to help meet the region’s water requirements entirely through desalination, while recycling 100% of wastewater for irrigation purposes.

Sources indicate the project was formally shelved following its failure to reach the contract award stage and as part of a broader NEOM organizational restructuring.

This cancellation comes after the termination of the Enowa renewable energy-powered desalination project in May 2024. NEOM has not issued an official statement regarding the Moonlight plant.
