Saudi Arabia to build stadium in the sky accommodating 46,000 spectators

Saudi Arabia is setting its sights on another world first with plans for the NEOM Sky Stadium—a revolutionary sports venue envisioned to be suspended more than 1,100 feet above ground. Designed as part of The Line, NEOM’s linear smart city, the project aims to become a global symbol of innovation, sustainability, and engineering excellence.

A new era for sports architecture

According to early reports, the NEOM Stadium will accommodate around 46,000 spectators and operate entirely on renewable energy, powered by solar and wind systems integrated into The Line’s infrastructure. If realized, it will set new standards for eco-conscious sports venues, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s push toward sustainable mega projects under Vision 2030.

Construction is reportedly slated to begin in 2027, with completion targeted for 2032—strategically timed to coincide with the Kingdom’s 2034 FIFA World Cup ambitions. The stadium’s elevated design will make it one of the most distinctive arenas ever built, offering panoramic views of NEOM’s futuristic cityscape.

Engineering ambition meets visionary design

The Sky Stadium’s proposed structure—suspended high above the desert landscape—reflects NEOM’s commitment to redefining urban development through advanced technology and precision engineering. Beyond its architectural spectacle, the facility is expected to incorporate cutting-edge smart systems for crowd management, immersive fan experiences, and energy optimization.

While the concept has drawn global attention, experts continue to discuss the technical feasibility and logistical complexity of executing such a bold vision within the proposed timeline.

A key pillar in NEOM’s $500 billion vision

Backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and international partners, NEOM represents a $500 billion initiative to build a next-generation region powered by technology, sustainability, and innovation. The Sky Stadium will add a new dimension to NEOM’s evolving identity—merging sports, architecture, and sustainability into one landmark development.
