A rare desert fungus known as the desert shaggy mane (Podaxis pistillaris) has reappeared in AlUla following recent rainfall, drawing attention to the region’s rich ecological diversity.
Resembling a mushroom and thriving in sandy and
clay-rich soils, this unique fungus is more than just a visual curiosity. It
holds cultural and culinary value, often used in traditional dishes for its
distinct flavor.
Its seasonal appearance is a natural indicator
of AlUla’s ecological health, showcasing the region’s biodiversity and the
