Team AlUla partners with WATR to assess environmental footprint
Team AlUla, the racing team championed by LeBron
James, competing in the UIM E1 World Championship presented by PIF (E1), has
announced an exciting new partnership with WATR, a tech-driven environmental
monitoring company. This collaboration will enable the team to assess and
mitigate its environmental footprint, particularly focusing on water quality
during their participation in the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing
series.
The E1 World Championship, governed by the Union
Internationale Motonautique (UIM), is the first fully electric powerboat racing
series, setting new standards for sustainability in motorsport.
Innovative
Environmental Monitoring
WATR’s flagship product is a multi-parameter
water quality monitoring system, known for being affordable, easy to deploy,
and highly versatile. The system provides real-time data on various water
quality parameters, including acidity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and salinity.
The data is available through both desktop dashboards and mobile alerts,
ensuring immediate notification whenever a parameter is exceeded.

With this technology, Team AlUla will be able
to track water quality changes before and after each race, allowing them to
visualize the environmental impact of their activities. The team, which
includes Catie Munnings and Rusty Wyatt as pilots, will also collaborate with
local stakeholders and share their findings with the broader E1 ecosystem,
driving positive change in the way electric boat racing interacts with marine
environments.
Sustainability
Commitment: Blue Impact Strategy
As part of its broader commitment to sustainability,
Team AlUla has introduced the Blue Impact strategy, which aims to minimize harm
to the environment while leading by example. This partnership with WATR
supports the team’s goal of understanding its environmental footprint and
taking steps to reduce and restore the marine ecosystems they race in.
This approach aligns with the values of AlUla,
the team’s title partner. Located in north-west Saudi Arabia, AlUla is renowned
for its dedication to sustainability and ecological restoration. The ancient
desert oasis is spearheading a major environmental regeneration initiative,
working to revive thousands of hectares of degraded land by 2030. The project
includes the replanting of native tree species and a wildlife conservation
program, notably focused on the reintroduction of the critically endangered
Arabian leopard.
Leveraging
Technology for Environmental Accountability
Glyn
Cotton, CEO and co-founder of WATR, expressed enthusiasm about the
partnership:
“Partnering with Team AlUla in the E1 Series
is an exciting opportunity to showcase how cutting-edge technology can drive
real environmental accountability in sports. Our mission is to improve water
quality globally, and this partnership is a perfect fit. By turning water
quality data into actionable insights, we’re helping Team AlUla understand
their environmental impact in real-time, allowing them to take meaningful steps
to reduce it. This is a powerful example of how innovation in environmental
monitoring can not only observe change but also lead it — both on and off the
water.”
