Iyris and Red Sea Global have introduced the National Food Production Initiative, a new program in Saudi Arabia focused on reviving unproductive land, supporting local farming, boosting the economy, and reducing the Kingdom’s dependence on imported produce.

“This initiative represents our commitment to sustainably enhancing Saudi Arabia’s food security and building a resilient, locally sourced food production system,” said John Keppler, executive chairperson of Iyris, an agri-climate tech firm dedicated to sustainable agriculture.

As part of this project, a 0.75-hectare sustainable farming facility has been established in Bada, transforming previously unproductive land into a fully functional farm. The facility includes a greenhouse equipped with agriculture technology developed in Saudi Arabia, now supplying fresh produce to Red Sea Global resorts.

"Using 100% Saudi-developed technology, partners, and innovation, we’ve transformed Bada into a sustainable farm, providing fresh produce for Red Sea Global,” Keppler added.

The project integrates Iyris’ SecondSky technologies with Sabic’s Trucircle materials, highlighting the role of local innovations in advancing the agricultural sector and supporting farmers. “Bada is now a model farm for local agriculture, offering a scalable solution for producing local food,” Keppler explained.

Raed Albasseet, group chief environment and sustainability officer at Red Sea Global, noted the benefits of the initiative: “This project has established a local food supply chain that reduces our carbon footprint and meets our guests’ expectations for high-quality, locally-grown food.”

Other partners in the National Food Production Initiative include Sabic, Napco National, Tamala, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), the University of Tabuk, and Terraxy. Together, these organizations are working to enhance food security and support Saudi farmers in developing agriculture suited to challenging climates, especially as climate change increasingly impacts the region.
