Saudi Arabia's cultural city to host Sotheby’s inaugural auction
Sotheby’s is set to hold its
inaugural auction in Saudi Arabia, marking a historic event for the renowned
auction house as it expands from the UK to the Middle East. Scheduled for February
8, 2025, the auction, titled Origins, will take place in the historic
Diriyah district of Riyadh, offering a unique experience for collectors, both
seasoned and new.
The Origins auction will be a
two-part event, featuring fine art by Saudi Arabian artists alongside works
from prominent international figures in art history. In addition to artwork,
the sale will include luxury items such as cars, handbags, jewelry, sports
memorabilia, and watches. A preview exhibition of the items will be open to the
public from February 1 to 8 in Diriyah.

Sotheby’s CEO, Charles F. Stewart,
emphasized the significance of this moment for the Saudi cultural landscape,
stating, “This is a very dynamic time for culture in Saudi Arabia. We’re
supporting the enrichment of the Kingdom’s artistic landscape, empowering
Saudi’s vibrant youth demographic.”

Sotheby’s has cultivated a strong
relationship with Saudi Arabia over the years, starting with its first
exhibition in the Kingdom in 2013, followed by a charity auction in 2017, and
participation in the Riyadh International Book Fair.
