Media Art Residency launched in Saudi Arabia's Diriyah

Diriyah Art Futures (DAF) has announced the launch of its first-ever Mazra’ah Media Art Residency, inviting applications from seasoned artists and scholars specializing in new media and digital art. The residency, which will run from February to April 2025, represents a pioneering initiative in the MENA region, providing a unique platform for innovation in media arts. Participants will have access to world-class studios, production labs, and a dedicated production budget.

This residency aims to foster cross-disciplinary innovation and intellectual exchange. Registration Opens for Mazra’ah Media Art Residency
The theme for the 2025 residency is "High-Resolution Dreams of Sand," a reflection of DAF’s commitment to critical and creative exploration in new media and digital art. The theme invites participants to create works that explore the intersection of Diriyah’s historical legacy and its future potential, engaging with the residency's location near Diriyah’s farms.

DAF’s facilities are housed within Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 6,550-square-meter complex, designed by Italian architects Schiattarella Associati, includes classrooms, labs, and exhibition spaces that bring together artists and technologists to explore the relationship between past, present, and future.

Proposals are encouraged to address contemporary issues and regional themes while engaging with global narratives. Special emphasis is placed on topics emerging from the MENA region and the Global Majority. Residents will enjoy inspiring accommodations with views of Diriyah’s historic farmlands.

Cultural Ecosystem Development
Ibrahim Alsanousi, Acting CEO of the Museums Commission, highlighted the importance of the Mazra’ah Media Art Residency in advancing Saudi Arabia’s cultural ecosystem. He noted that the initiative is part of the broader goal of transforming Riyadh into a global center for new media and digital art, fostering international cultural exchange.

Application Process
The residency is open to established artists and scholars working in fields such as sound media, visual media, and other new media disciplines. While applications are welcomed globally, there is a particular focus on the MENA region.

Dr. Haytham Nawar, Director of DAF, emphasized the unique opportunity offered by the residency: "This dynamic residency offers artists and scholars an unparalleled chance to push the boundaries of their creative practices." He encouraged passionate individuals in these fast-evolving fields to apply.

The name "Mazra’ah" translates to "farm" in Arabic, paying homage to the residency’s location overlooking Diriyah’s historic farms. These farms have been a critical part of the region’s heritage since Diriyah was the capital of the first Saudi state.
