ARASCO signs MoU with Neom, Cargill to support expansion of Saudi aquacultural sector
The Arabian Agricultural Services Company (ARASCO) has
signed a memorandum of understanding with Neom, the $500 b Saudi futuristic
city, and Cargill, a leading agribusiness company, to support the expansion of
aquaculture in Saudi Arabia.
The signing ceremony was held in Riyah in December 2022
which was witnessed by Nasser bin Abdulaziz Abanmi, CEO of ARASCO, Dr. Juan
Carlos Motamayor, Head of NEOM Food and Helen Ziv-douki, Global President of
Cargill’s Aqua Nutrition business.
Under the agreement, the three sides will collaborate to find
sustainable ways to meet the burgeoning demand for aquaculture in the country. This
also includes research and development into feed sources that are sustainable
and environment friendly.
Nasser A. Abanmi, ARASCO CEO while giving the history of aquaculture
in Saudi Arabia said since its start nearly 35 years ago, it has now become one
of the highest exports in the kingdom.
He said Saudi Arabia is blessed with abundant natural
resources along the west coastline (2,600 KM Long) where aquaculture can play a
key role in Saudi food security.
Dr. Juan Carlos Motamayor, Head of NEOM Food, said aquaculture
is one of the most sustainable ways to produce protein in arid countries such
as Saudi Arabia. This agreement will ultimately lead to addressing the need to
replace fishmeal by more sustainable fish feed.
Helen Ziv-douki, Global President of Cargill’s Aqua
Nutrition business in her remarks appreciated the opportunity to collaborate
with ARASCO and NEOM to produce the much needed seafood in an
environment-friendly manner.
This initiative synchronizes with the plans and programs for
the development and diversification of the Saudi economy under the Kingdom's
Vision 2030.
