Saudi Arabia takes major step in building a globally competitive maritime sector
Saudi Arabia has taken a major step
toward building a globally competitive maritime sector with the announcement of
its first Saudi-built ocean-going vessels. The Kingdom’s leading shipping and
logistics company, Bahri, confirmed an order for six dry bulk carriers from International
Maritime Industries (IMI), marking the launch of the nation’s first large-scale
shipbuilding project.
The new vessels will be constructed
at IMI’s state-of-the-art shipyard in Ras Al-Khair, the most advanced
full-service maritime facility in the MENA region. The initiative supports Vision
2030 and the Saudi Inc. strategy, aimed at localizing supply chains,
strengthening national industries, and positioning the Kingdom as a global
maritime hub.

Eng. Ahmed Ali Al-Subaey, CEO of
Bahri, said:
“This agreement marks a strategic milestone for Bahri and a defining moment
for the maritime industry in the Kingdom. Through our partnership with IMI to
launch the first large-scale national shipbuilding programme, we are not only
modernising our fleet but also laying the foundations for a sustainable and
globally competitive maritime sector. The construction of these new carriers
will expand our reach into strategic markets, strengthen supply chain
resilience, and create long-term value for our stakeholders in line with Vision
2030.”
The new geared Ultramax carriers are
designed for maximum flexibility and efficiency. With the ability to serve
ports that have limited infrastructure, they will enable Bahri Dry Bulk to
access niche markets and emerging trade routes. This versatility reduces
exposure to market volatility while enhancing competitiveness, sustainability,
and long-term growth.
The agreement marks a milestone not
only for Bahri and IMI but also for the Kingdom’s wider ambition to develop a world-class
maritime ecosystem, diversify its economy, and reinforce its standing in
international trade.
