NEOM completes Light Rail Tunnel and Underground Parking ahead of schedule
NEOM has finished constructing the underground parking and light rail tunnel
for THE SPINE ahead of schedule this July.
XCMG Machinery, a Chinese construction equipment provider, announced the completion of these critical phases. Their statement highlighted the deployment of 10 high-capacity drilling rigs, each responsible for completing three foundation piles per day despite the challenging sandy conditions.
The rig fleet included four XR500E, two XR600E, two XR320D, and two XR400D models, managing pile foundations that varied from 60 to 90 meters in depth and 2 to 2.5 meters in diameter.

THE SPINE, an infrastructure corridor running parallel to THE LINE, is designed to facilitate both freight and passenger rail transport.
In April 2024, a consortium led by Spain’s FCC Construction reported that construction on the 8.7-kilometer tunnel was 25% complete.
Previously, in June 2023, NEOM revised its plans, scaling back the scope of THE SPINE projects. The number of stations was reduced from 48 to nine, and freight rail will now share the infrastructure with high-speed rail, while the commuter line has been postponed.

In June 2022, NEOM awarded two drill-and-blast tunneling contracts for the 28-kilometer tunnel. The first contract went to the FCC Construction SA/China State Construction Engineering Corporation/Shibh Al-Jazira Contracting Company Joint Venture (FCC/CSCEC/SAJCO JV), and the second to the Samsung C&T Corporation/Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd/Saudi Archirodon Company Ltd Joint Venture (SHAJV).
These tunnels will span 28 kilometers, providing separate routes for high-speed and freight rail services, thereby enhancing the efficiency and safety of transporting people and goods.
