Saudi Arabia: NEOM pushing the boundaries of clean transportation

NEOM is pushing the boundaries of clean transportation as Hyundai Motor Group completes its hydrogen bus trial in Trojena, the mountainous region of Saudi Arabia’s $500 billion smart city project.

The trial marked a milestone—the first use of hydrogen-powered vehicles in high-altitude terrain. Hyundai’s UNIVERSE fuel cell electric coach bus successfully navigated routes with elevations of up to 2,080 meters and gradients as steep as 24 percent. The test simulated passenger transport between Trojena and NEOM’s upcoming central business hub.

This initiative stems from a memorandum of understanding signed in September 2024 between Hyundai and NEOM’s Mobility sector, aimed at co-developing next-gen zero-emission transport solutions.

The trial was conducted in collaboration with ENOWA, NEOM’s energy and water subsidiary, which recently built the region’s first hydrogen refueling station. That station also supported Hyundai’s use of the UNIVERSE bus for VIP transportation between October and December 2024.

Hyundai’s hydrogen efforts in Saudi Arabia are part of a broader strategy that began in the late 1990s. The project supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and Hyundai’s HTWO platform, which encompasses hydrogen production, storage, and mobility applications.
