Neom to offer green, sustainable living to residents
The first phase of The Line, Saudi
Arabia’s groundbreaking linear city, is set to open in 2030.
A
Vision of the Future
What would life inside The Line be
like? According to Denis Hickey, Chief Development Officer of NEOM, the city
will function as a fully integrated, high-density, car-free urban environment.
Speaking at Davos, Hickey offered an immersive glimpse into daily life within
The Line, describing it as an unprecedented urban experience.
The Saudi Gazette reports that The
Line will operate as a three-dimensional vertical metropolis, with modular
sections stacked in a linear format.
Everything
Within Reach
“Everything you need will be just a
five-minute walk away,” Hickey explained. “Step outside your home, and you’ll
immediately have access to schools, restaurants, workspaces, hospitals, and
entertainment—without ever needing a car. This isn’t just about compact living;
it’s about designing a city that prioritizes human well-being over congestion.”

Standing 500 meters tall along its
entire length, The Line will create a canyon-like urban landscape, allowing
residents to move both vertically and horizontally with ease.
“This isn’t a single building—it’s
an entire city with its own grid system,” Hickey noted. “Think about Manhattan.
You don’t need a car there because the subway and avenues make everything
accessible. Now, imagine evolving that concept—The Line enables seamless
movement upward as well as sideways.”
A
Sustainable, AI-Powered Future
Unveiled in 2021, The Line is
envisioned as a 170-kilometer-long, 200-meter-wide, and 500-meter-tall linear
city designed to eliminate cars, roads, and carbon emissions. It aims to create
a sustainable, AI-driven urban environment for up to 9 million residents.
However, recent reports suggest that by 2030, only a 2.4-kilometer section will
be completed in its initial phase.

More Cars: A Six-Tier Mobility System
One of The Line’s most radical
features is the elimination of cars and traditional roads. Instead, the city
will feature a six-tier mobility system designed for ultra-efficient transport.
“Urban sprawl is outdated. We’re
moving beyond expanding cities by adding more roads,” Hickey said. “The Line
will be the world’s first major city built entirely without cars. Residents
will rely on a high-speed underground rail system, general mass transit, and
rapid vertical transportation.”

At the heart of this system is a
high-speed rail (HSR), allowing residents to travel the entire length of The
Line in just 20 minutes. The rail will also connect directly to NEOM
International Airport, reducing travel time to only 25 minutes.
Complementing the rail system,
general mass transit (GMT) stations will be positioned every 1.5 to 2
kilometers, ensuring convenient and efficient transportation options. Unlike
traditional cities that retrofit transit networks into existing urban spaces,
The Line’s mobility infrastructure is being designed from the ground up,
eliminating congestion and optimizing accessibility.
Effortless
Vertical Movement
Vertical travel within The Line will
be just as seamless. Next-generation rapid vertical transport nodes will
replace traditional elevators, allowing residents to move both upwards and
sideways at high speed.
“When people hear ‘no cars,’ their
first question is, ‘How will I get around?’ The answer is simple: faster and
more efficiently than in any city today,” Hickey stated. “The average commute
will be 20 minutes or less to anywhere within The Line.”

With its bold vision for urban
living, The Line represents a radical shift in city design, prioritizing
sustainability, efficiency, and human-centered planning. As construction
progresses, the world watches closely to see if this ambitious project will
redefine the future of metropolitan life.
